Correspondance des chapitres de The Lord of the Rings avec leurs versions préparatoires dans The History of The Lord of the Rings (Home VI-IX, XII)
Nous avons déjà proposé une correspondance des chapitres du Silmarillion avec sa première version dans The Book of Lost Tales. Nous poursuivons ici ce travail d’utilité publique en nous focalisant sur Le Seigneur des Anneaux. Nous indiquons donc la référence à The Lord of the Rings EN BLEU et alignons le titre de chaque chapitre de l’ouvre publiée en 1954-1955 avec les titres courants utilisés par Christopher Tolkien dans The History of the Lord of the Rings qui court des volumes VI à IX de The History of Middle-earth (Home) pour le roman proprement dit, complété au volume XII pour l’Épilogue et les Appendices. Les esquisses (ou notes et l’Épilogue) de suite de l’histoire apparaissent EN ROUGE sans correspondre évidemment à un chapitre particulier.
Nous n’avons pas dans cette « Correspondance » suivi les titres préparatoires des chapitres mais retenu le titre courant de Christopher Tolkien. La « Synopsis de The Lord of the Rings » qui approfondira ce travail se chargera de marquer les évolutions de la nomenclature des chapitrages.
La troisième phase de rédaction en Home VI et la quatrième en Home VII ont nécessité, même dans l’économie de cette correspondance générale, d’indiquer la pagination pour la correspondance des chapitres. Home VIII comprenant, pour sa part, plusieurs parties, chacune d’elle est désignée par une lettre romaine majuscule avant que ne soit donné le numéro du chapitre. Home IX présente également plusieurs parties, mais puisque seule la première concerne The History of the Lord of the Rings, nous ne l’avons pas numérotée en romain.
