Hisweloke's Sindarin dictionary project
Revision log starting from pre-version 1.8b–0.9941 (forked from the 1.7–0.994
production branch used in Hesperides). A lowercase “b” after the edition number
(e.g. “1.8b”) stands for “beta-version”.
[1.8b–0.9941] to [1.8b–0.9947] : June 2004
- (Lexicon) Remove D. Salo’s etymologies, never
reviewed nor updated since the project started, and therefore now quite obsolete,
inconsistent and inacurrate... Tough and unpleasantly long task, but it had
to be done.
[1.8b–0.9948] : July 2004
- (Lexicon) Fix indexed entries to always refer
to a singular form (e.g. so that “elf” and “elves” will be collected under
the same heading in the reversed index. Fix some cross-references which were
not pointing to the correct entry.
- (Lexicon) Add more domain information (Zool.,
Pop., Cal., etc.)
- (Tools) Modularize the XSLT style-sheets used
to generate XHTML from the XML TEI source code. Extend the subset of supported
TEI features and review the IPA to Unicode mapping to be based on XSLT only
(no extra off-line processing required).
- (Tools) Create a new XSLT style-sheet to generate
a “thematic” Sindarin dictionary.
- (Tools) Enterely redesign the XSLT style-sheet
for the reversed index an change it to generate an “analogical” English/Sindarin
dictionary.
- (Tools) Generate XSL-FO versions of all three
dictionaries (using XSLT style-sheet from Antenna applied to the XHTML versions)
- (Tools) Generate PDF versions of all three dictionaries,
using PassiveTeX. Rendering is not perfect in this version: broken phonetics
(missing Eselvier font?), rather weird spacing after periods (missing french-spacing?),
failure to encode apply some small/boldface/italic font change, extraneous
spaces around commas and parentheses.
[1.8b–0.99481] : September 2004
- (Lexicon) Take into account some old corrections
reported on SINDICT (recent reports are still to be considered for later inclusion).
Start taking into account some corrections from VT 45 A&C (to a very
small account in this version).
- (TEI header) Change the license (from Open Publication
License with restrictions to Creative Commons) and remove inappropriate copyright
notice.
- (TEI header) Add additional limitations of scope
and legal matters in the license section to (at least) clarify the copyright
issues. Mark the dictionary as unauthorized.
- (Tools) Hack the “xmltex.cfg” configuration
file to use the so called french-spacing mode. Hack the “ucharacters.sty”
file from PassiveTeX to use the TIPA font (at least for the subset of phonetic
characters used in the dictionary) so that phonetics will appear correctly.
- (Tools) Hack the top-level XSLT style-sheet
generating XSL-FO to support some of the XHTML constructs currently ignored
(e.g. fieldsets) and fix the font change issues.
- (Tools) Add a small Tcl script to clean-up redundant
spaces in the XHTML files to make them smaller. Also use it to fix the spacing
problem around commas and parentheses, as it appears to be too hard to do
in the XSLT style-sheets.
[1.8b–0.99482] : October 2004
- (TEI header) Rewrite the old “notes” section
(credits): use (+ update) the paragraph from the old PDF version of the dictionary.
- (TEI header) Clarify the wording in the “source”
section (unfinished state of the project).
- (Tools) Fix some phonetic characters which were
missed in 1.8b–0.99481.
[1.8b–0.994821] : June 2005
- (TEI header) Slightly improve the wording in
the license description..
- (Tools) Fix some spacing problems in the XSLT
style-sheets.
- PUBLIC BETA VERSION.
"To do" list for next versions:
[1.8b–0.99483]
- (Lexicon) Fix several typos noted when reviewing my printed version
of the “analogical” dictionary.
- (Lexicon) Make some loosely encoded entries more consistent with the
rest of the dictionary.
- (Lexicon) Align similar definitions (e.g. month-names) to look alike
for all entries. Add more domain information (e.g. Pop.) for inclusion in
the “thematic” dictionary.
[1.8b–0.99484]
- (Lexicon) Revise the way cross-references are encoded. The current
view is not satisfying at all (e.g. “tolothen ... see also tollui”) : it is
loosely encoded as a simple comment including a pointer. Most of the time
(but not always), it ought to be a related entry specifically marked as being
a cross-reference to a variant, so that we can ignore it in the “analogical”
dictionary instead of repeating it several times. Tough and unpleasantly long
time once again, but it should greatly improve the appearance of the “analogical”
dictionary.
- (Tools) Update the way related entries are handled in the XSLT style-sheet
(in order to take into account the above change).
[1.8b–0.99485]
- (Lexicon) Take into account more corrections from VT 45 and VT 46
(A&C)
- (Tools) Finalize the XSLT style-sheets and fix some small details
(e.g. some fonts are bit too small in the PDF). Try to improve the XSL-FO
processing to get rid of the initial blank page. Try to improve or hack the
PassiveTeX tool-chain to avoid compilation errors due to UTF-8 characters
occuring in labels.
- (Review) Consider this version for official release 1.8–0.995
[1.8–0.995]
- Change the packaging (simplify the source tree).
